Night of the Proms, Paris, Monday 3rd May 2004

As I've never been in Paris, and I have some good friends there, like Fabrice (the big "collector" of Supertramp stuffs) and Laurent (The sax player of The Logical Tramps) I decided visiting the city and attending the performance of Roger Hodgson in Night of the Proms.

The place, "La Villete", ample and spectacular. A complete symphonic orchestra 72 musicians and 50 people in the chorus. And also the "Electric Band" of John Miles. The stage is wide and beatiful, nice set of lights.

This edition includes the performances of "The Pointer Sisters" from the States, and other french and canadian artists (Patrick Fiori, Roch Voisine, etc) very popular singers in France, specially for the teenagers, but really unknow for me, and of course the Electric Band (bass, guitar, drums, saxophone, keyboards, etc...) of John Miles, performing every year in NOTP.

After the introduction ( a classical theme), the show started with energy thanks to John Miles and "Music", getting the audience ready for the show. The whole show, as usual, much quality, variety, no boring at all, a bit of classical music (in exemple parts of Ravel's Bolero or Blue Danube well-chained with other themes) , a bit of pop, a bit of opera, a bit of humour, three hours in total. Even the speaker asked to the audience about dancing in the wide corridors while the orchestra was performing the waltz, and it was so funny the enthusiasm of the audience.

The last artist performing on the show was Roger Hodgson. Norbert Fimpel first was playing the first notes of "School" with the harmonica, dramatic introduction, and a bit later Roger appeared on keyboard playing "The Logical song", a nice reception from the audience !!!. It was really fantastic for me listening again The Logical song, Fool's overture and Give a little bit, from the superb voice of Roger and the superb symphonic Orchestra and chorus, like in the previous editions, but I was really touched when I heard the first notes of DREAMER, again in Paris, 25 years after the "Supertramp in Paris" album. The audience was so enthusiastic !!!

Wow !!! Extraordinary quality of sound, my heart going fast, and the audience really surrended. Many people (me too) went to the first row, next to Roger, while he was singing Give a little bit, everybody stand up. It was a magical moment ! Roger spoke to the audience several times, trying much words in french language, as he was living in France for a while during the recording of the "Open the door" album. So casual, nice, lovely, smiling, as usual, giving care and love to the audience and everyone feeling like at home. Big heart.

Roger has cuted his long hair, no beard, and he looks younger :o)

After the performance of Roger, the orchestra played the traditional march "Land of hope and glory". Finally all the artists got back to the stage for the last number and say goodbye. They sang "Yellow submarine" following the playing of Roger Hodgson on 12 strings guitar and his special voice. A funny end :o) Last editions they performed "Hey Jude" or "Let it be" ... Beatles forever ........

After the gig I was lucky to talk with John Miles and other artists. I was happy to say thanks to Roger for the wonderful show and specially for Dreamer !! a nice surprise this powerful song with a powerful orchestra !!!

I was also happy to meet Norbert, the saxophone and harmonica player on this show, he's a musician from Argentina but living in Mallorca, and he was playing on the 2000 tour of Roger around Europe together with Bob Siebenberg, Jesse and Andrew. Norbert is fan of Supertramp since teenager, like many of us, then he's living within a kind of dream. Nice to meet him.

Well, that's all. I'm looking forward to attend the next show in the south of France next week. The organizer of Night of the Proms announce it will release a CD of this tour (as usual) then you will find it soon on the shops or Internet.

Concierto Night of the Proms, Paris, Lunes 3 Mayo 2004

Aprovechando que nunca había estado en Paris, y que tengo algunos amigos allí, como Fabrice (el gran "coleccionista" de Supertramp) y Laurent (saxofonista de los Logical Tramps) me decidí pasar unos días coincidiendo con la actuación de Roger Hodgson en Night of the Proms.

El lugar, La Villete, amplio y espectacular. Completa orquesta sinfónica de 72 músicos y 50 de coro. Además de la "Electric Band" de John Miles. La puesta en escena muy cuidada y la iluminación a la última.

Este año participaban las americanas "The Pointer Sisters", y otros artistas franceses y canadienses (Patrick Fiori, Roch Voisine, etc) muy populares en Francia, sobre todo para las adolescentes, pero desconocidos para mi, y por supuesto la Electric Band (bajo, guitarra, percusión, saxo, teclados, etc...) al mando de John Miles, presentes en cada edición.

Tras una introducción con una pieza clásica, el show comenzó fuerte con el tema "Music" de John Miles, siempre de agradecer, y que te pone las pilas. El resto del show, siguiendo la línea de ediciones de años anteriores, con mucha calidad, variedad, nada aburrido, un poco de clásica (extractos por ejemplo del Bolero de Ravel o el Danubio Azul muy bien enlazados con otras piezas) , un poco de pop, un poco de ópera, un poco de humor, tres horas en total que te pasan volando. Incluso en el "mix" de valses el presentador ofreció al público salir a bailar a los amplios pasillos, y la verdad es que fué divertido ver la entusiasta respuesta de la gente.

El último en actuar fué Roger Hodgson. Primero apareció Norbert Fimpel interpretando las notas de armónica de School, como misteriosa introducción, para a los pocos instantes aparecer Roger al teclado interpretando "The Logical song", causando la explosión del público. Si ya me parecía fantástico escuchar Logical song, Fool's overture y Give a little bit con Orquesta sinfónica y coros, como en ediciones anteriores, además de esto ha sido una gozada disfrutar de DREAMER en Paris, 25 años después del recordado disco "Supertramp en Paris". Verdaderamenre impagable.

Guau !!! Sonido de primera, La piel de gallina y el público en el bolsillo ...... totalmente entregado. Muchos bajamos junto al escenario a escasos dos metros de Roger para acompañarlo en Give a little bit, toda la audiencia en pie. Fué un momento mágico ! Roger se dirigió al público entre canción y canción, intentando bastantes palabras en francés, ya que estuvo viviendo un período en Francia en la grabación del "Open the door". Muy informal y con su sonrisa, como siempre, dando cariño y haciendo que la gente se sintiera como en casa. Todo corazón.

Roger se ha cortado el pelo, su larga coleta, y ahora está más al estilo de la gira del 83, aunque un poco más largo y sin barba. Parece más joven :o)

Tras su actuación se cerró el show con la ya tradicional marcha "Land of hope and glory". Finalmente salieron al escenario de nuevo todos los artistas para despedirse interpretando "Yellow submarine" capitaneada por Roger Hodgson con la 12 cuerdas y su característica voz. Un divertido final :o) En otras ediciones se había interpretado "Hey Jude" o "Let it be" ... siempre Beatles........

Más tarde tuve la suerte de compartir un rato agradable con los artistas en la recepción "after show". Le pregunté a John Miles por la colaboración de Alan Parsons en el Night of the Proms 2002 y le comenté que está de gira por España en unos días. Le pude agradecer a Roger que interpretase Dreamer, una de mis canciones favoritas, cosa que el sabe perfectamente, y que se me puso el corazón a mil !!! Y también pasé un rato muy agradable charlando con Norbert, el saxo y armónica en el show, músico argentino afincado en Mallorca, y que ya participó en la gira que hizo Roger en Europa en el 2000 con Bob Siebenberg, Jesse y Andrew. Norbert es fan de Supertramp desde adolescente, como muchos de nosotros, así que es todo un sueño que aún no se acaba de creer todo lo que está viviendo. Me alegré mucho de conocerle.

Bueno, pues eso fué todo. Espero impaciente al próximo show al que asistiré, en el sur de Francia. La organización de Night of the Proms anuncia que publicará un CD de esta gira (como lo hizo en las anteriores ediciones) así que al que le interese supongo que lo podrá encontrar por la red próximamente.
