I always look for the songwriter who can write that one special song.  With rock artists it’s always the one who can write the big crossover song.  The pop song in the rock genre.  I know that’s often seen by fans as selling out, but I’ve never really understood that attitude.  We got it to a certain extent in Marillion when we had the big hits with Kayleigh and Lavender.
 
One of the best examples of that approach of songwriting is Roger Hodgson. I have always loved Supertramp.  I remember buying Crime of the Century from Preston Market. It made a strong impression on me.  It was a rock album, but it had these delightfully poppy melodies.
 
And then I played with Roger in Malta.  It was just him and his piano and he was amazing.  You just forget how many memorable songs he’s written.  Just listen to Breakfast in America – so many amazing songs on one album. And he’s incredible as a lyricist and songwriter.  His sense of melody is unsurpassable, and the way he writes is just pitch-perfect for his voice.  Sister Moonshine from Crisis? What Crisis?, is a particular favourite of mine.  And the song Breakfast in America.  He’s the only guy I know who got the word “kippers” into a rock song.

Siempre me fijo en el compositor que es capaz de escribir una canción especial. En los artistas de rock es siempre aquel que puede combinar el pop y el rock en un tema. Se que eso es visto a menudo por los fans como una cuestión de "ventas", pero jamás he entendido esa actitud. Nosotros lo conseguimos hasta cierto punto con Marillion, cuando tuvimos dos grandes éxitos con Kayleigh y Lavender.
 
Uno de los mejores ejemplos de ese enfoque en la composición es Roger Hodgson. Siempre me ha encantado Supertramp. Recuerdo cuando compré el disco Crime of the Century en Preston Market. Me dió una tremenda impresión. Era un álbum de rock, pero contenía todas esas deliciosas melodías pop.
 
Y un buen día toqué con Roger en Malta. Eran sólo él y su piano, y resultó impresionante. Olvida cuántas canciones memorables ha compuesto Roger. Simplemente escucha el disco Breakfast in America – cuántas canciones increíbles en un solo album !. Y es además extraordinario en las letras y en las composiciones. Su sentido de la melodía es insuperable, y su forma de componer encaja perfectamente con su voz. El tema Sister Moonshine del album Crisis? What Crisis?, es una de mis favoritas.  Y la canción Breakfast in America ..... es el único tipo que conozco que consiguió meter la palabra "kippers" (arenques ahumados) en una canción rock.
