ROGER's Spanish Tour, October 2007
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Almería and Madrid

To celebrate Roger's first Spanish tour (six concerts in total) I took time off. It was worth it.
And I went to all the concerts. Two of them were some months earlier in Castellón and Sos del Rey Católico, and then four more in October. Also I went to the concert in London some days before, where I met some friends from Barcelona, but that's another story ... (see the London show review )

All these concerts in this tour followed the same pattern: Roger with his 12 string guitars (one of them tuned in G key for the song 'Along came Mary'), Korg Triton keyboard, Grand Piano, and accompanied by the sax player Aaron McDonald, who also gave an exceptional performance with the saxophones, clarinet, melodica, harmonica, keyboard and backvocals.

The sum of all this is an acoustic sound, but clear, powerful, and clean at the same time, which allows you to enjoy the whole range of details, that you don't normally hear with a live band.

After the tour in England, the truth is Roger arrived in Spain in great form, with his voice as fantastic as ever and ready to enjoy himself playing and speaking with the audience and fans.
The jokes have been continuous on stage, as has the complicity of Aaron who tried to translate to Spanish sometimes ....
Roger expressed his affection for the spanish public every night, he always said "you are a bit crazy, but you have great passion and a big heart" and it is this unusual mix that he loves. In part because he's also a bit like this ...

The setlist has been very similar in every concert, except for small variations.
For example in Tenerife he played 'Open the door', in Almería and Madrid he surprised us with the Encore 'Two of us', and in Madrid with 'If everyone was listening'.
It's worth pointing out that he included in the setlist the four nights the numbers 'Child of visión' (with Aaron playing the final solo on the piano), the unreleased song 'Oh Brother', and the number 'The more I look' which he hasn't played for a long time.

Obviously all the hits he wrote for Supertramp, which are better known, are those that get the biggest reaction from the public, because it seems incredible to hear again these old songs, sung live by the person who composed and recorded them, with his wonderful voice just in front of you. You can see the fascination in the faces when listening to 'Hide in your shell' or 'Even in the quietest moments', and above all the hits such as 'Logical song', 'Dreamer', 'Breakfast in America' and 'It's raining again'. That's when noone can stay seated, and this is the party, lots of people singing with Roger and the atmosphere is incredible.

In Tenerife the concert was in a modern indoor sports pavillion a sell-out, the biggest venue of the tour (around 5000 people or more) where the fans were the most enthusiastic. In fact from the song Dreamer until the end of the encores the people pushed towards the stage dancing and moving, me too :o) that's why I was able to get some great photos up front of Roger and Aaron.
The stage was huge and there was a giant screen so you didn't miss any detail.

The other three shows in Las Palmas, Almería and Madrid were in auditorium, around 1,500 or 2,000 people, full except in Madrid where you could see spaces in the higher rows because of the lack of promotion by the promoter.
The auditorium in Las Palmas was the best in terms of scenery and ligthing, first with the views of the sea through the glass wall, and then with the gigantic screen behind the stage reflecting the beautiful lights.

As I was collaborating with the merchandising selling I was able to speak to a lot of fans every night, and really the general feedback was very positive and everybody had a great time with this fantastic artist and his incredible songs.
I met lots of friends every night. In Madrid I even sold two DVDs and four CDs to a famous Spanish television presentor, who was very excited by the show ...

There were funny things every night. I remember people who had asked for a pick or an autograph from Roger during the concert, which he did with a big smile, two little girls who both gave him a rose in Madrid, and Ainoa, the daugther of the fan Alejandro, who Roger greeted in several concerts (they were in Castellón, Sos del Rey Católico, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Madrid.....)
In Almería Roger blew bubbles at the fans in the first row at the end of the show :o)

Para celebrar la primera gira de Roger en España (seis conciertos en total) me tomé unas vacaciones. La ocasión lo merecía.
Y asistí a todos los conciertos. Dos se celebraron meses antes en Castellón y Sos del Rey Católico, y ahora cuatro más en Octubre. También me escapé al concierto de Londres días antes, donde me encontré con otros amigos de Barcelona, pero esa es otra historia... (ver Review de Londres)

Todos estos conciertos de la gira tienen la misma estructura: Roger con sus guitarras de 12 cuerdas (una de ellas afinada en clave G para el tema 'Along came Mary'), teclado Korg Triton, Piano de cola, y acompañándole el saxofonista Aaron McDonald, que también hace un excepcional trabajo con los saxos, clarinete, melódica, armónica, teclado y voces.

La suma de todo ello es un sonido bastante acústico, pero claro, potente y limpio a la vez, que permite disfrutar de todos los matices que el sonido de una banda en directo no permite apreciar.

Tras la gira en Inglaterra, la verdad es que Roger ha llegado en plena forma, con una voz en fantástico estado y unas ganas de pasarselo bien tocando y hablando con público increíbles.
Las bromas han sido continuas, también con la complicidad de Aaron que le hacía de traductor a español a veces..... ha expresado cada noche su gran cariño por el público español, del que siempre dice que "estamos un poco locos, pero con una gran pasión y un gran corazón" y que esa extraña mezcla le encanta. En parte porque el es también un poco así ... ( o mucho ....)

El setlist ha sido muy similar en cada concierto, salvo pequeñísimas variaciones.
Comentar por ejemplo que en Tenerife tocó 'Open the door', que en Almería y en Madrid nos sorprendió en el BIS con 'Two of us', y en Madrid también con 'If everyone was listening'.
También destacable que han estado en el repertorio las cuatro noches los temas 'Child of visión' (con Aaron haciendo el solo de piano final de forma meritoria), el tema inédito 'Oh Brother', y el tema 'The more I look' que hace tiempo que no interpretaba.

Evidentemente todos sus éxitos en Supertramp, que son los más conocidos, son los que provocan una mayor reacción en el público, pues parece increíble volver a escuchar temas tan antiguos en directo con la persona que los compuso y grabó delante de tus narices y con una voz maravillosa. Se nota en las caras de la gente la fascinación de escuchar Hide in your shell o Even in the quietest
moments, y al legar a éxitos como Logical song, Dreamer, Breakfast in America o It's raining again ya nadie puede mantener la calma y eso es una fiesta, mucha gente canta con Roger y el ambiente es increíble.

En Tenerife fué en un moderno pabellón de deportes con todo vendido, el aforo más grande de toda la gira (sobre 5000 personaz o más) y donde la gente se mostró más cálida y animada. De hecho desde el tema Dreamer hasta el final de los Bises la gente se acercó hasta el escenario todo el mundo bailando y saltando, yo incluido :o) por eso pude sacar algún primer plano de Roger y Aaron.
El escenario inmenso y con pantalla gigante para no perderse detalle.
El tema Dreamer con todo el pabellón cantando al unísono ponía los pelos de punta !!!

Los otros tres conciertos en Las Palmas, Almería y Madrid eran auditorios, de unas 1.500 o 2.000 plazas, llenos excepto en Madrid donde se veían huecos por arriba debido a la falta de promoción por parte del promotor.
El auditorio de Las Palmas fué el más bonito en cuanto a escenario y luces, primero con la vista del mar tras el escenario de cristal, y luego con una pantalla gigante que tapaba la trasera del escenario y recogía todos los juegos de luces.

Debido a que estuve al cargo de la venta de merchandising pude hablar con mucha gente cada noche, y la verdad es que el feedback general era muy positivo y todo el mundo se lo pasó en grande con este fantástico artista y sus increíbles canciones.
Me encontré con un montón de amigos en cada noche, y como curiosidad, en Madrid le vendí dos DVDs y cuatro CDs de Roger al pesentador de la tele Juan Imedio, que estaba muy entusiasmado tras el show ...

Anécdotas y curiosidades cada noche. Recuerdo gente que le ha pedido una púa o un autógrafo a Roger durante el concierto, a lo que accedió con una sonrisa. Dos niñas que le entregaron sendas rosas en Madrid, o la pequeña Ainoa, hija del fan Alejandro, a la que Roger saludó en varios conciertos (estuvieron en Castellón, Sos del Rey Católico, Tenerife, Gran Canaria y Madrid.....)
También se ofreció a soplar unas pompas de jabón desde la primera fila en el concierto de Almería :o)

Esperamos verte de nuevo en España querido Roger !!!
