First time with the new band in Spain

Finally ! Roger came to Spain with his new band, after several years touring Europe and America.
This is his first official concert with band here, but in fact Roger played in Madrid with a mini-band (bass player and drummer) in year 2000, Circulo de Bellas Artes, and I was happily there too.
Also, Roger performed in Spain with symphony orchestra, twice: Madrid in 1995 (Night of the Proms) and Valladolid in 2009.

Tell you the truth,  many friends and fans during last years came to us asking when Roger would play with band here, and finally their wishes and dreams have come true. Obviously the sound is more powerful with band, and for lot of people who loves the albums this kind of full sound is more similar to their memories on their heads, and that's a good point for lot of them. We do love the acoustic shows, but also we expect some bass sounds and drum beats in certain moments.

Thanks to this line up, Roger made some little changes in the Set List, compared to the acoustic show in Barcelona months ago (Palau de la Musica). One song from each solo-studio album was included (In Jeopardy from "In the eye of the storm", London from "Hai Hai" and Along Came Mary from "Open the door")
But also an unreleased nice song was performed, well-known to fans: "The Awakening". And also a surprise, the song "Across the Universe" as tribute to John Lennon.
Great songs beloved by fans as "A soapbox opera", "Hide in your shell", "Child of Vision", "Don't leave me now", etc ... sounded great with the help of the whole band. Awesome !

Roger didn't forget the hits, that made the audience crazy, as always.
Roger is in good shape and his voice was clear, beautiful, in a high level.
When Roger appeared on stage, what a warm reception from the audience, everybody clapping for long time, showing the care and affection. Roger's works touched us for sure.... Deep nice feelings on the air for this nice man. And this is something that I can see in all Roger's shows, wherever I go to see him, and I've been in lots of shows around the world. Not only the songs, but there's something that goes beyond that, and one can feel the special connection between audience and this sensitive little man with a big heart.

Roger's first words were about the beautiful place (and about the heat too, the summer storm increased humidity) and he said he was surprised by Tarragona, Roman town, and pretty ....... "Historical"! -laughs-.
In the latest songs, as usual, most people was stand up and dancing, even running throug the corridors until the stage, in order to be close to him, jumping and dancing.

The place was an outdoor amphitheater next to the old walls of Tarragona, but covered by a tall tent, rain protection for the  whole venue (see the photo). In fact it was raining during the show and it was spectacular the listening of the heavy rain beating the canvas while sounding quiet parts of some songs. Especially in Fool's Overture"!
Moreover, the first bass sound that Roger plays on his keyboard Roger, coincided exactly with a great lightning, which increased the drama of the moment and caused an "ohhhhh" in the audience .....
Wow, it was better than planned : o)

It seems that the rain damaged some equipment outside (got wet) and caused a small problem with the sound, but was solved.
The end of the song "Dreamer" was a highlight in the night. the biggest ovation, maybe several minutes. This beloved song

makes you happy, even when you feel sad or down. Amazing .....
Quite a while everyone standing and clapping. After that, and while the raindrops were heard clearly on the tent, Roger said "well, it's time for Fools overture ".... and the notes sounded as you were at home listening this great album with the sound of raindrops hitting your window during a winter evening ..... Wow, what a moment!! chills.

Obviously the rain was the right environment for the song "It's raining again": o) we all celebrate, joyfully. By the way, it was the last number .....

It was a magical night, and Roger is comming soon to Spain with his band: Calella de Palafrugell on August 1st !

Por primera vez en España con la nueva banda

Por fin se acercó Roger a España con su nueva banda, con la que ya lleva unos pocos años de gira por Europa y America.
Este es su primer concierto oficial aquí con banda, aunque en realidad Roger ya tocó en Madrid con una mini-banda (bajo y batería) en el año 2000, Circulo de Bellas Artes, donde estuvimos también.
Y con orquesta sinfónica hemos tenido el privilegio de tenerle también, en Madrid el año 1995 y en Valladolid en 2009.

La verdad que en los últimos años muchos amigos se nos habían acercado para preguntarnos si Roger tocaría con banda alguna vez, y por fin sus deseos se han hecho realidad. Desde luego el sonido gana mucho en potencia y cuerpo, pareciéndose más a los discos originales, y para los fans que tienen muy metidos los discos en la cabeza este es un punto a favor.

Aprovechando la banda han habido pequeños cambios en el repertorio comparado con el concierto acústico reciente en Barcelona en el Palau de la musica. Ha interpretado una canción de cada uno de los tres discos de estudio en solitario (In Jeopardy del "In the eye of the storm", London del "Hai Hai" y Along Came Mary del "Open the door")
También una canción inédita pero conocida por los fans, "The awakening", y además una sorpresa, como el tema "Across the universe" en homenaje a John Lennon. Temas muy queridos por los fans, como "A soapbox opera", "Hide in your shell", "Child of vision", "Don't leave me now", etc... ganan mucho con el sonido de la banda al completo.

Por supuesto no faltaron todos los éxitos, que hicieron poner al publico en pie, como siempre.
Roger está en buena forma y su voz estuvo finísima, a gran nivel.
El publico le recibió con una gran ovación nada más salir al escenario, por largo rato, se nota el cariño que se le tiene, sin duda sus trabajos nos han llegado al corazón. Y esto es algo que observo en todas partes, yo que viajo bastante a sus conciertos. No es solo por las canciones, hay algo que traspasa eso y se nota, una conexión especial con una persona de gran sensibilidad y corazón.

Las primeras palabras de Roger fueron de asombro por el bonito lugar (y por el calor también, la tormenta veraniega aumentó la humedad ambiente) y dijo estar sorprendido por Tarragona, romana y bastante....... "histórica" ! le salió al final, entre risas.
En las utimas canciones, como suele ocurrir, la gente no aguantó mas sentada y compartimos todos en pie el momento con Roger, muchos incluso acercándose al borde del escenario, y saltando y bailando.

El lugar era un anfiteatro al aire libre junto a las murallas de Tarragona, pero protegido por una alta carpa que impide que la lluvia moje el recinto. De hecho llovió durante el show, y era curioso escuhar la fuerte lluvia golpeando la lona mientras  sonaban partes tranquilas de las canciones. Sobre todo en "Fool's overture" !!!
Es más, el primer sonido de bajo que hace sonar Roger con su teclado en dicho tema coincidió con un gran relámpago, lo cual aumentó el dramatismo del momento y provocó un "ohhh" general .....
Vamos, ni preparado :o)

Parece ser que la lluvia si mojó algún equipo del exterior y provocó algún pequeño problema con el sonido, pero que pudo ser solventado.
Tras Dreamer llegó la más grande ovación de la noche, los pelos de punta, es un tema muy querido y que te alegra estés como estés.
Bastante rato todo el mundo en pie y aplaudiendo. Tras eso, y mientras se escuchaba la lluvia claramente sobre la carpa, Roger emocionado dijo "es la hora de Fools overture".... y comenzó a sonar, como si uno estuviera en casa escuchando ese magnífico disco con el sonido de las gotas de lluvia golpeando en la ventana una tarde de invierno..... Guau, que momento !!!!

Eso si, la lluvia fué el entorno adecuado para el tema "It's raining again" :o) que todos celebramos con risas, Roger incluído. Que pena que era el último tema .....

Fué una noche mágica, donde nos juntamos un montón de amigos venidos de Barcelona y otras partes del país compartir estos momentos, y en breve lo volvemos a tener aquí con su banda, en Calella de Palafrugell el 1 de Agosto !

En el Auditori del Camp de Mart, bajo las míticas murallas de Tarragona, por primera vez pude disfrutar de la actuación de Roger Hodgson con banda. El recinto era magnífico, y aunque el clima no acompañó, el toldo que nos cubría evitó males mayores.

Efectivamente hubo algunos problemas de sonido al principio, pero luego la cosa mejoró y técnicamente todo fue impecable, incluida la voz de Roger (como siempre) y la actuación de la banda. Algunas de las que ya le había oído en solitario mejoraron mucho con el grupo ("Hide in your shell", ¡por fin!), y otras de las no habituales ("In Jeopardy") quedaron también espectaculares.

Ya que hablamos de la banda, mencionemos a los músicos (a los que Hodgson presentó, con humor británico, mencionando el origen canadiense de todos ellos menos el del batería, californiano pero que según él también está pensando en mudarse a Canadá): el teclista Kevin Adamson, sobrio, magnífico en el solo de Child of Vision; el batería Bryan Head, en segundo plano cuando hacía falta y muy acertado en algunos momentos como en el reggae "London"; el bajista Ian Stewart, granítico; y el saxofonista (que no clarinetista ) Aaron McDonald, el habitual, cada vez más metido en su papel, espectacular; todos ellos impecables.


En contraste, no faltaron tampoco las canciones más intimistas que también me pusieron la piel de gallina: "Easy Does It", "Know Who You Are", y la sorpresa de la noche:
"Across the Universe" de los Beatles.

Espectacular fue también oir "Fool's Overture" rodeados de rayos y truenos, para acabar soltando adrenalina con "Give a Little Bit" e "It's Raining Again" (nunca mejor dicho) como de costumbre.

Al acabar, un poco de mitomanía charlando y fotografiándome con Lluís Gavaldà y Joan Reig del gran grupo Els Pets.
