The song "Danielle"
was not included in the album "Open the door", but an extra single CD was released. The song was also included in some editions within the album (like in Germany). Roger refused the song for the album initially, due to the church-organ sound, so similar to "Say Goodbye" song, then little repetitive, among other reasons.
The song "Land Ho" from the album "Hai Hai"
released in 1987, is a new version of the song already recorded with Supertramp in 1974, and published as a single that year. Roger was the composer. This original version recorded with Supertramp in 1974 (almost identical) was included in the album "Retrospectacle", year 2005.
released in 1984, was "Sleeping with the enemy". The album was ready (mixed) in May 1983, before the Supertramp tour. The tracklist was:
B-side: Love is a thousand times, Say Goodbye, The Journey, Everyone dies
But after the succesful Supertramp last tour, Roger changed his mind, went to the studio again, and changed the energy of the album, too intimate in the begining, keeping only couple songs from his original idea. And actually the tracks "Had a dream" and "Hooked on a problem" were rejected from previous album "Breakfast in America". The song "Land ho" was included later in "Hai Hai" and "Love is a thousand times" and "Say Goodbye" were included in "Open the door".
El título inicial del album "In the eye of the storm"
publicado en 1984, era "Sleeping with the enemy".
Cara B: Love is a thousand times, Say Goodbye, The Journey, Everyone dies
When producing a new album, it's a common procedure to choose between large list of songs, rejecting some tracks according the album's concept. Some of the rejected songs are released years later. Even maybe you don't know that some songs included in Roger solo albums and Supertramp-after-Roger albums, were rehearsed and recorded (demos) by all-band-together before the split. For exemple, they recorded some demos (Roger with Supertramp): "Brother were you bound", "Free as a bird", "Hooked on a problem", Only because of you", etc
both appeared in two Roger albums each. "In Jeopardy" came on the first Roger's album "In the eye of the storm", and 13 years later on the live album "Rites of passage" with John Helliwell on saxophone, a wonderful version. "Showdown" appeared precisely in this album "Rites of Passage" and later in the studio album "Open the door", updated version, with an excerpt from a speech by Ronald Reagan in the background.
The first chords of the song "London"
were well known in Spain in 1987, because the first instrumental seconds of the song were used as soundtrack for TV ad for Fall-season Fashion in "Corte Ingles" malls, massive TV promotion.
Roger Hodgson and Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
There are certain similarities in their history, plus their name "Roger": both British, great talent and source of inspiration for their respective bands. The first highly successful album of each band almost coincided in time ("Dark Side of the Moon" in 1973 and "Crime of the century "in early 1974) and the last album before splitting each band as well (" The Final Cut "and" Famous last words "in 1983) with much similarity in the album-titles .....
and their reasons for the split were similar in certain way: both felt stuck and tied on their bands, they didn't feel supported by their band-mates for their new ideas, and they needed to open their horizons. Of course, the big difference is that Roger Hodgson was a gentleman and gave the name "Supertramp" to the rest of the band, while Waters, in a "moment of arrogance" as he recognized years later, tried to prevent the group continue without him as Pink Floyd. Both continue today their solo careers, faithful to their life-philosophy. And finally, both have composed a song named "Don't leave me now".
Roger Hodgson y Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
